“Eight Architects to Watch”

Editor’s Note “ Over the past two decades, we have featured their projects, supporting them in their contribution to Singapore’s built environment, while also subliminally giving definition to the country’s architecture. It is therefore apt that this become the focus of a feature, where we trace its evolution in the last 20 years.

Yet, even as we look back, we must look forward. We have singled out eight architects to keep our eyes on, making up the next generation who will shape Singapore’s buildscape. Visit our website for the extended versions of our interviews with them, progressively published from July till the end of the year.” - Lo Shi Ping

Borderless Exhibition, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

"This past September, in Ho Chi Minh City, there was an architectural exhibition that brought together a number of architectural design companies in Southeast Asia. Organizing is a young design company in both age and career - Sawadeesign. The intention to hold an exhibition stems from the trips that Sawa has the opportunity to experience throughout her career. The exhibitors are also young design studios in Southeast Asia. Most of these studios are on their own way to find and assert a separate path in the profession of architecture.

Borderless is a small-scale exhibition, but the connection has always wanted to be as large as possible, that's what the organizers are aiming for. More than two months of preparation, taking place in five days, (from September 18 to September 22, 2020), the exhibition has statistically had 200-250 visitors / day. The group of visitors is mainly students from universities specializing in architecture - interior in Ho Chi Minh City. In addition, the exhibition is also strongly welcomed by young architects who want to learn about architecture and especially many foreign visitors. Taking place at the right time of covid translation, foreign units could not be present, but everyone was excited and promised another convergence occasion."

“Sensitive to place, experiential in process and resolution, this project presents a singular understanding of a sustainable environment”

INDE Awards 2020

A project that we started in 2016 had a simple vision of sharing with the community the natural beauty of Sukabumi and garnering awareness of organic farming to the public. We had hope that by bringing more awareness and connecting guest to the farm, would bring about a greater appreciation of their food sources, the environment and the farmers who work tirelessly to grow each produce.

We are humbled and excited for this recognition, having this highest accolade amongst the projects submitted across the Indo Pacific region.

As a young team, we are optimistic that we can do more and be better guardians for our environment and communities.

Jury citations for winning projects as follows:

Outstanding HDB Flat/ Best Space for Retreat/ Home of the year 2019: Shizukokoro

“This apartment shows a balance between great design and functionality. The styles and materials are appropriate and well considered. Structural challenges have been cleverly overcome, resulting in a well designed and thought-out space.”

"This project very successfully achieved the transformation of an HDB flat with a series of simple interventions that achieved the clients brief for a Japanese inspired interior. We were particularly impressed by the customised furniture items that were produced for the project.”

“This project displays an astonishing level of transformation to an interior. The materials are well chosen and provide comfort; the forms well articulated and provide defined yet flowing spaces; and the detailing sophisticated and sensitive – a most well-deserving winner.”

Overall comment from the jury:

"In a changing world, nothing is more important than adaptability and innovation. GOY ARCHITECTS is set up so ingeniously; the three women that run this company should be so proud of their achievements. Their approach to design has a conscience and shows a greater skill at play. Their designs are well on their way to becoming extraordinary!"

SUKASANTAI, FARM TO TABLE MOVEMENT, FILM BY GOY ARCHITECTS, 2019

“There is a saying in Indoneisan. Takanal maka tak sayang - This is a saying about people, if you don’t know somebody, then you don’t care about the person. You can say this is true about nature too, if you are not in touch with nature, you won’t care about it.” '- Stephanie Moriyama.

Sukasantai is a family own and run organic vegetable farm stay located on the highlands of Gunung Gede, Sukabumi, Indonesia. The 6 Ha organic farm with its communal kitchen, dining space and twelve accommodation rooms seeks to reacquaint city dwellers with nature and the origins of their food supply. In the farm-stay, visitors can be reacquainted with nature and the origins of their food supply.

With the growing disconnection of people not knowing how and where food comes from, the project hopes to reconnect this disjuncture. The guests can interact with the local community and participate in planting and harvesting activities alongside with them.

MAKING ARCHITECTURE, ARCHIFEST OCT 2019

URA ATRIUM

We exhibited our process models for One Tat Seng .

We studied a various colour combination of the sun shading with varying degrees of angles, spacing – drawing inspiration from leaves foliages. The powder-coated sheet aluminium expanded metal mesh is then cut and folded into a 'Z' configuration for structural stability. As an urban and landmark strategy, we wanted to highlight the escape staircase not as a practical entity but as an urban sculptural structure. We painted the core of the escape staircase with two tones of green. The above creates two vertical illuminances that punctuate along the stretch of dusky industrial estates.
